A Study inChaos

Chaos is not noise. It is what order looks like before you have found the distance to read it from, or the patience to watch it settle, or the honesty to admit nothing is in charge.

01

Contention

Four versions of tomorrow, every one of them good, all making a fair claim on the same twenty-four hours. Chaos rarely comes from one clear villain. It comes from several reasonable things reaching for the same limited thing at once.

Emergence

From thirty thousand feet a city at night looks designed. On the ground it is pure noise, and nobody in it can see the shape they are making. Distance doesn't invent the pattern; it just gets far enough back to notice one.

Perspective

The mug going cold at the elbow, the country and where it seems to be going, the species and how briefly it has been here. The noise is worst halfway up, where everything is urgent and almost nothing can be acted on.

About the project

Made for zine 0009, the ninth and final issue from the Ottawa Design Club, whose call gave itself over to creative chaos.

About the author

I'm Sonali Priya. By profession I'm a creative director at a company in St. Louis, working in the space between design and tech. I like chasing new ideas and making something a little different and creative every time. In my free time you'll find me out in the woods or somewhere in a game.

This is my exploration of chaos and the quiet ways it works into an ordinary day, the way a plan, a mood, and an interruption keep negotiating over the same afternoon.
